After waiting a full year for the originally scheduled 2020 Olympic games, which were delayed until summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans were finally able to watch Olympic golf. Despite this year’s Olympics looking a little different than we’re used to—a number of big-name golfers opted out, for one thing—the games did not disappoint, giving fans plenty of suspense, heart, and just plain great golf.
Xander Schauffele Wins Gold
After a suspenseful weekend where American golfer Xander Schauffele showed his stuff with multiple back-to-back birdies, a huge 13-foot putt, and plenty of finesse, he finally secured the gold medal with a close victory over Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini. Sabbatini left with the silver medal and Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan eventually took the bronze after a seven-man, four-hole playoff.
Scchauffele’s win was an emotional one. He told reporters that he was doing this for his dad, an athlete whose own Olympic aspirations were cut short when he was hit by a car as a young man. Not only that, but winning the gold in Japan has significance for Schauffele because his mother grew up there and his grandparents still live there. Schauffele’s victory was an important one to him on a personal level, and you could see it all over his face at the medal ceremony.
Nelly Korda’s Win
The United States came out of the 2020 Olympics with not one, but two gold medals in golf. In women’s golf, American Nelly Korda managed to take home the gold after initially tying for the lead with Japan’s Mone Inami. Korda secured her win at the 72nd hole, where Inami bogeyed and Korda sunk her putt for par. “I’ve always been a fighter. I will never back down and I’m going to fight to the end—and I showed that today,” said Korda about her gold-medal win.
