2018 Masters champion and LIV Golf player Patrick Reed is demanding a public apology from CNN for comments made about him. Reed is threatening a $450 million lawsuit if CNN does not comply. CNN has not yet issued an apology for the comments about Reed.
CNN’s Damaging Comments
Reed’s law firm, Klayman’s Law Group, alleges that CNN broadcasters Bob Costas and Jake Tapper made unacceptable defamatory comments about Reed.
Reed’s lawyer stated “This widely viewed broadcast in Florida, the nation and internationally, was not only defamatory but also designed to incite ridicule, hatred and violence against LIV Golf players, such as my client Patrick Reed, a world champion professional golfer, by publishing that he takes ‘blood money’ from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy 22 years ago.”
Patrick Reed’s Reaction
Reed’s lawyers are demanding an on-air apology to Reed and for the original broadcast to be removed from CNN’s website and streaming service. If this does not happen, Klayman’s Law Group says they will pursue a lawsuit against CNN for $450 million.
Reed is known for being particularly litigious. He has filed multiple defamation lawsuits in the last several months, including one against the Golf Channel and one against the Associated Press. So far, CNN has not issued the apology that Reed is pressing for, and golf enthusiasts are interested to see what happens next.
