Phil Mickelson, one of LIV’s most prominent spokespeople, recently decided to remove his name from LIV Golf’s antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour.
Background
LIV Golf has been controversial since its conception, and in June 2022, the PGA Tour barred all of its players from participating in LIV Golf events. This resulted in an antitrust lawsuit that alleged that the PGA Tour acted in a “nakedly anti-competitive manner.” Phil Mickelson, who signed a cushy LIV contract earlier this year, was the first plaintiff named in the lawsuit.
However, Mickelson has decided to remove his name from the lawsuit.
Phil Mickelson’s Statement
Mickelson has stated that he is still behind LIV Golf, he simply does not see the need to take part in the antitrust suit at this point.
Mickeslon said “The only reason for me to stay in is damages, which I don’t really want or need anything. I do think it’s important that the players have the right to play when and where they want, when and where they qualify for. And now that LIV is a part of it, that will be accomplished if and when they win.”
Other pro golfers Talor Gooch, Ian Poulter, and Hudson Swafford also removed their names from the lawsuit. This leaves just three golfers, the most notable of whom is Bryson DeChambeau, with their names on the lawsuit.
A judgment hearing for the case will take place in July 2023, with the potential for a trial in January 2024.
