Many golf enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s upcoming TGL Golf League, but it looks like we will have to wait longer than originally anticipated to see what the TGL is all about.
TGL Arena Severely Damaged Due to Power Failure
In mid-November, the TGL arena experienced a power failure, which resulted in the deflation of the arena’s dome. The air-supported dome spans about 250,000 square feet, accommodating an expansive simulator featuring a 46-by-64-foot screen for players to take shots, complete with additional elements such as greens and bunkers. The facility is anticipated to have a seating capacity for 2,000 people.
“An overnight failure to the temporary power system used during the construction phase caused deflation and damage to the air-supported dome section of the site… There were no injuries, and most of the technology was not impacted,” said a statement from TMRW Sports.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but the deflation of the dome has set back construction significantly and delayed the start of the golf league’s events.
TGL Start Date Pushed to 2025
TGL’s events were originally planned to begin on January 9th, 2024, with weekly events through March. However, because of delays and complications resulting from the arena damages, the TGL is now expected to commence in early 2025. The TGL issued a statement explaining the decision:
“Following discussions with key partners, including players, our six team ownership groups, PGA Tour leadership and our commercial partners…the decision has been made to postpone the start of the TGL season until early 2025. This decision came after reviewing short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the prime-time sports television calendar. Despite this new timeline for the venue, we remain excited about the future of TGL and will continue to build excitement between now and the start of the season with our players, fans, and teams. We have begun to update plans and timelines and are confident that the extension will only improve our delivery.”
Eager fans are sure to be disappointed by the delay, but anticipation continues to build for the tech-focused golf league. Golf fans and pros alike are excited to experience the new league’s “stadium-style golf,” which will include a large (64 by 46 foot) simulator screen, an indoor green for short-game shots, and player microphones for better televised viewing.
