Fans of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are eager to learn more about what the upcoming tech-based golf league (TGL) is going to look like. The TGL league was formed by pro golfers Woods and McIlroy, along with founder and CEO of TMRW Sports, Mike McCarley.
The inaugural season for TGL is set to begin on January 9th, 2024.
What Will TGL Golf Be Like?
While we still don’t have a ton of details about what to expect from TGL’s upcoming season, we do know some basics about what it’s going to look like. There are 15 planned matches for 2024, which will most likely be in round-robin format where every team has a chance to compete against each other once. This will be followed by semi-finals and final matches. The matches will be three-versus-three and are expected to take just two hours each.
TGL has signed a TV rights agreement with ESPN, and the first event will be shown on prime time on ESPN as well as simulcast on ESPN+ on January 9th, the day after the college football national championship.
The tech part of the TGL comes in the form of the venue. TGL events will all take place at the SoFi Centre, which is still under construction. The SoFi Centre is going to be a “golf stadium” that has a football-field sized playing ground with a large (64 by 46 foot) simulator screen. Players are expected to play wood and iron shots into the screen, while short-game shots will be played directly on the green. Players will also be wearing microphones to make for better television viewing.
Who Will Play in TGL Events?
So far, 16 players in the league have been announced (with 18 slots total). Those players are:
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Tommy Fleetwood
- Rickie Fowler
- Tyrrell Hatton
- Max Homa
- Billy Horschel
- Tom Kim
- Shane Lowry
- Rory McIlroy
- Collin Morikawa
- Jon Rahm
- Justin Rose
- Xander Schauffele
- Adam Scott
- Justin Thomas
- Tiger Woods
That’s a pretty stacked lineup! We can’t wait to see who the final two players will be and to watch these skilled golfers go head-to-head in 2024. TGL events are bound to be pretty different from the traditional golf we’re used to, but the inaugural season is bound to be exciting, and it will be interesting to see how this new league’s focus on tech and spectatorship evolves over time.
