Wyndham Clark’s Unexpected Victory

29-year-old American golfer Wyndham Clark, who just won his very first PGA event in May of this year, has now won his first major at the 2023 US Open. Up until now, his best finish at a major was in 175th place.

Clark wasn’t most people’s pick to win this year’s US Open, so his breakout performance made for a surprising and exciting final round. He started strong with a score of 64 in the first round, then ultimately secured his victory at the beginning of the final round when he opened with a birdie. This was followed by a few ups and downs, but ultimately Clark came out on top. After his win, he told the media: “It’s tough, on the back nine, trying to win a tournament, I felt at ease and I just kept saying, ‘Alright, I can do this. I can do this.’ The shot on 14 was kind of the shot of the week for me — to make a birdie there and grind it on the way in.”

Rory McIlroy Takes Second

While Rory McIlroy didn’t manage to grasp the win, his second-place finish is still nothing to scoff at. Coming in second at the 2023 US Open means that McIlroy has now made it to the podium for the third time in his last seven majors. He now has 19 top-ten finishes in majors since his last major win nine years ago. McIlroy said: “When I do finally win this next major, it’s going to be really, really sweet. I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship.”

Scottie Scheffler Comes in Third

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, ended up placing third in the US Open 2023 after a lot of ups and downs over the weekend. The final round saw him birdie and bogey his way through, ultimately securing third place. After the final round, Scheffler said: “I just felt like I wasn’t sharp enough today to move up the board. I did a good job of keeping myself in it but I just wasn’t sharp enough.”
